To be a non profit, we are required to show where we have donated monies and how it was donated, if we don't reach the threshold set by the IRS they would take away our tax exempt status. As a VFW Commander I don't make any money, no matter how much time I spend doing VFW business and neither does my Quartermaster who probably spends way more time then I do. Hope this helps, if you join an organization be responsible and attend the meetings and be involved, then you not only know where the money goes but you get to have your say on where it goes. Hope that helps

For many years, I have made donations to the VFW and DAV. Last year I joined the VFW as a life member. Since I was going to the VFW to help me with my Agent Orange claim, I felt it was right to go ahead and join. The most important aspect of a VSO is their ability to help veterans.
