Who really thinks they want to be productive American citizens? Why aren't they making the same demands to the governments of their countries of origin?

Yes, you are tracking, correctly! The politicians are to blame considering they aren't doing anything to control the border. Milton Friedman argued that you cannot have open immigration in a welfare state because the quality of people coming are not the same before public assistance became readily available. Prior to 1914, they came for work, today, they come for benefits.

Only in America! This is one BIG reason why we need to change the party affiliation of the next resident at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. My goodness! Incredible!!!

CW5 (Join to see) The party affiliation alone won't ensure it stops. Several of the R candidates are pro amnesty and/or anti-border security. Bush himself may as well run as a democrat with his views on illegal aliens.

My solution to this and all other issues plaguing the United States is very simple: regulate the amount of time a Congressman/woman can be elected and make lobbying illegal.
The president is charged with the up-keeping of Federal law and providing specific instruction for federal agencies to abide by. Congress creates the laws and funds the programs. Regardless if it is a Republican or Democrat, they are all at fault. I do not see any difference between the political parties.
Any lawful permanent resident (green card holder) can get a SSN. Any lawful permanent resident can get a drivers license. You must be a US Citizen to get a US passport or to vote. I do not see that changing (other than in California where they seem to invent ways to circumnavigate basic requirements for political gains).
From my experiences in dealing with the immigration system and having a close family member go through the process, I do not like it. The cost alone is enough to cause people not to abide by the rules and regulations of becoming a lawful permanent resident or even a citizen. I do, however, agree with the test and other requirements for obtaining US citizenship.

Which part of "illegal" is unclear? I have no problem with people immigrating to the U.S. - honestly all of our families did at some point in time. The problem I have is with the "illegal" part. How can "illegal" anything participate or expect any assistance? It just doesn't pass my "common sense" test.

CW3, I agree with your thoughts on this. If we are truly a land of laws, than why not follow them? Why should we pay for immigrants when they can not follow the most basic law of the land?
