Cold War: Fall of the Berlin Wall. Communist-controlled East Germany opens checkpoints in the Berlin Wall allowing its citizens to travel to West Germany. This key event led to the eventual reunification of East and West Germany, and fall of communism in eastern Europe including Russia.

SSgt Alex Robinson thanks for posting, very instrumental for the success in Europe. I served in West Germany, and was part of the re-unification in 1990. Sweet!

My best assignment was to AFN Europe with AFN-TV, Berlin. What a wonderful town!

I remember very well. My mother (German born) cried all night, she was so happy.

I remember riding the freedom train to Berlin and going through Checkpoint Charlie as a young PFC before the wall came down. The exchange rate was unbelievable, and the currency (if I remember correctly) was in Rubles (sp). We had to wear our Class A's when we went into East Germany and I couldn't help but feel like someone was watching me the entire time I was there. The people were nice but they were oppressed and it was evident, even to a 19 year old I could tell they were under strict control. I remember President Reagan saying those famous words "tear down this wall".
