For them to take an interest in you. When you walk up and go "hey Sergeant, I got a problem/idea..." And they just look at you blankly and go "What do you want me to do about it?" That's kinda the wrong answer.

Other than that shield the Joes from the idiocy of LTs

If your going to drop the privates and make them go to PT....do it with them. I can tell you from an E-3 perspective that when I do my push-up/sit-up drill and see the sergeant just standing there when there are other sergeants walking around critiquing it makes me furious. Basically, don't tell your troops to do something that you can't do yourself.

SSG's used to doing what she wants, so when we had an idea and presented it to MSG, she made a snide comment. MSG drops her on the spot. We stand there, thankful to see her get hers, so she says some bullshit about Army values and makes us do them with her.

Personally, I enjoy having leaders that are human beings. I enjoy being an excellent soldier for my NCO, but also being able to talk about our weekend plans or opinions on certain events. Also, being able to guide and show your soldier the ropes is a huge advantage and paves the way for him/her to be a potential leader.
