Doris "Dorie" Miller was a Messmen Third Class. the United States Navy noted for his bravery during the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. He was the first African American to be awarded the Navy Cross, the third highest honor awarded by the U.S. Navy at the time, after the Medal of Honor and the Navy Distinguished Service Medal. The Navy Cross now precedes the Navy Distinguished Service Medal. Miller's acts were heavily publicized in the black press, making him the iconic emblem of the war for blacks—their "Number One Hero"—thereby energizing black support for the war effort against a colored Japanese enemy. Nearly two years after Pearl Harbor, he was killed in action when USS Liscome Bay was sunk by a Japanese submarine during the Battle of Makin.

Absolutely! But not because of his race, IMO that takes away from his heroism. He was a sailor and a hero, that is sufficient to give him the credit/award he so richly deserves.

They had already named an older Knox class frigate in honor of him, it was the USS Miller (FF-1091), he was also on a .44 stamp several years ago.
I do think that he is more than deserving of the Medal of Honor. Look at all the former service members they have awarded the MOH to from past wars and they had previously been awarded some pretty high awards at the time.
I think that the Navy should name a new ship after him and correctly call it the USS DORIE MILLER and I think that the Medal of Honor would be fitting for person who took action and never gave any thought to his own personal safety, well maybe after the fact he thought "WTF did I just do?" But still you cannot question this mans heroism.
We all know that back in WWII there was far too much emphasis on a persons color or religion and I am not going to say that we need to right a wrong or that we need to fix a social injustice, we need to award the proper honor that is long overdue to an exemplary sailor.

In The movie Pearl Harbor, isn't he played by Cuba Gooding Jr?
