I'm working with a recently separated veteran who seeks to return to service in the Air Force Reserve.  He was a US Army SSG (active component), left active duty in Jan '13 after 11yrs of service, and is a former UAV instructor operator.  Additionally, he has completed FAA school and will complete his pilot's license this spring.  He's most interested in aviation-related or unmanned fields, but will consider other options to return to service.  So, we're looking to bring in Air Force Reserve, Air National Guard, Recruiters, Career field managers or any experienced service members who can help to guide the process, answer questions, provide points of contact, etc.  If we've missed anything, are not yet asking the right questions, or you have anything to add, please feel to join the conversation.  Thanks all, we're looking forward to your input!

As far as not getting back into the service, he has options on the civilian side.  He was an instructor operator so I'm going to guess he flew the Shadow and can apply to one of several companies that are associated with that program from GOCO teams that deploy to theater or an instructor position with AAI or a sub-contractor under them.  If he's looking to get onto another system, hiring is kind of slow lately as most of the jobs are to deploy to theater and that is kind of drying up with the drawdown going on in Afghanistan.  If he would like to use his GI bill there are colleges out there that are giving UAV related degrees such as University of N. Dakota or University of Kansas.  These programs offer manned pilot training up to commercial ratings as part of the degree program that the GI bill also pays for since its part of the accredited course work.  There are other colleges that are developing programs such as Emby-Riddle who should have their full BS degree program to offer soon.  I anticipate plenty of marketable jobs in the US from governmental and civil service jobs to commercial jobs that employ the use of UAVs as airspace is established by the FAA for them to fly in over the next few years.  For now, staying and flying in the unmanned world pays much more than flying in manned aviation as most pilots starting out only making anywhere from $17,000-23,000 a year.

Sir,<br><br>I'm no Recruiter (my Father was one though).&nbsp; I did know a TSgt on Beale AFB that was picked up for the 1U0X1 AFSC, and went off to Creech AFB, NV for training for Sensor Operator of either the Predator or Reaper.&nbsp; The former Army SSG might go on these websites that both have Chat options to address individual cases.&nbsp; Also, since these are the dot coms (public), they are generally good resources to find local AF Reserve and ANG Recruiters.&nbsp; Here they are for USAFR:&nbsp; http://afreserve.com/ and ANG:&nbsp; http://goang.com/ . Hope this helps!<br><br>VR,<br>Ted<br><div class="pta-link-card"><div class="pta-link-card-picture"><img src="http://goang.com/Content/img/logo-white.png"></div><div class="pta-link-card-content"><div class="pta-link-card-title"><a target="_blank" href="http://goang.com/">Air National Guard</a></div><div class="pta-link-card-description">Find a rewarding career, discover your strengths, develop your skillset, expand your potential and serve where you live - at any of the Air Guard's 140+ units.</div></div><div style="clear:both"></div><div class="pta-box-hide"><i class="icon-remove"></i></div></div><div class="pta-link-card"><div class="pta-link-card-picture"><img src="http://afreserve.com/images/icons/apply.png"></div><div class="pta-link-card-content"><div class="pta-link-card-title"><a target="_blank" href="http://afreserve.com/">Home - Air Force Reserve</a></div><div class="pta-link-card-description">The Air Force Reserve is an ideal option for those who have never been in the military and want to participate without being on full-time active duty, the Reserve is also a great way for those in othe...</div></div><div style="clear:both"></div><div class="pta-box-hide"><i class="icon-remove"></i></div></div>

You're welcome.  I applied (and was denied) for the first non-rated Cadre to go train to fly RPA's (and have a Friend who is a Lt Col who flies the Reaper).  You might tell him to hold off on 'out of pocket' FAA Private Pilot License costs, because I think there is an IFT (Introductory to Flight Training) phase that sends them 'on the gov't's dime & time' to Pueblo, CO for their PPL.  Nonetheless, that might be Officer side only and not hold true for the Sensor Ops guys.
