AFNET... While it has it's issues is the most mature and in my opinion secure of each. The Air Force has led the way building this capability and we've always taken more secure measures on top of DOD instruction. I'll admit I've had little experience with NMCI but I've heard the stories and it does not always sound too good.

I agree as a cyber guy the AFNET is a relative success....but as a user of the AFNET its a major source of frustration. There are two forces at work here. The AFNET as an defensible and efficient architecture is a success. The resourcing of cyber support personnel....miserable failure.
Asked once...You can have the most efficient secure system but if you can not use it...does it matter?

Not to sound cynical but the NMCI failures resulted in the Navy owning Cybercom....(ADM Rogers)

My experiences with NMCI criticism is Pre-CyberCom. Back when JTF-GNO was housed at DISA, before the merger with the JFCC-NW.

Great, great question and definitely something we should ponder as we move towards more transformational solutions in a pursuit of the Communications Squadron - Next.

We have to look at from the users' perspective not just metrics from Remedy. Based on a few unofficial surveys (Reddit, rally point etc) 100% users and techs stated failure. From HHQ perspective, it's mixed. The architecture and program was well developed but not funded or was a bulls eye for bean counters.
If the AFNET was a secure , well sustained, and reliable "weapons/mission system" we wouldn't have a need for the AOC or DCGS.
AOC's have stood up cyber defense flights to guard our "Crown Jewels". This model is perfect for wings and bases. I believe the cyber squadron will be tailored to support the weapon system, mission system, critical infrastructure at that base.
