My NYC Fleet Week experience happened around 15 years ago when I was still living in NJ and working as a marine electronics technician in the New York City area, I had to take a launch out to a Greek vessel "on the hook" in Stapelton Anchorage. It's been a while but I believe I had to do perform an annual radio survey on board the vessel.
I remember waiting for the launch to return once I was finished with the survey. As I was waiting, I was watching the "parade" of naval ships sailing up the Hudson river. It was an awesome sight, indeed.

The Navy brings a few ships in Portland, OR for the Rose Festival. It was great to see them during those times.
