Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, Cuba is on the front lines for regional security in the Caribbean area. The base supports the ability of U.S. Navy and Coast Guard ships, along with allied nation ships to operate in the Caribbean area by providing contingency and quality logistical support with superior services and facilities. The base also supports the Department of Homeland Security in U.S. migrant operations to help care for displaced migrants from the surrounding area, effectively helping control the flow of illegal immigrants into the United States.

Thanks for the information, sir. I knew the base had been there for over a century and only recently added the prison, but wasn't sure of its other purposes.

The Army has a Vet Services detachment down there, but everything else is Intel and detainees.

It is a very big SIGINT platform. You can't miss the antenna farm.

Capt Jeff S. - Those antennas are pointed all over the place, not just at Cuba.

Capt Jeff S. - The physical infrastructure of the SIGINT facility could be elsewhere, but that stuff is not cheap. Moving it would cost a hefty fortune. And for what? We have a treaty with Cuba that allows for that base to be there. There is no earthly reason to close it other than Castro doesn't want it there.
It isn't so much that GITMO is indispensable in and of itself. The base is a link in the chain of defensive facilities that shield the southern approaches of the US from any threats from that direction, much like facilities in the Alutian Islands, Thule, Greenland, and Keflavik defend the north. The ones in the Caribbean are largely aimed at drug interdiction and Coast Guard activities these days.

Sgt Richard Buckner - Not to mention that we can keep the Cuban regime in check from the island base. It's our in perpetuity, but if Kerry makes a "deal", we will be expelled within a month.
