It seems that a lot of the training we do is mandated and does not meet the unit needs outside of a rule saying all SM will attend this training.

Of course we have, the emphasis is on line training with a test as a proxy for learning

I won't forget doing SSD III and having to go through a PowerPoint training on proper D&C for a flag detail. As if a Soldier learns anything about D&C by watching dots move. Some training needs to be done face to face.

It is completely CYA and prove it by showing your certificate verses true leadership by mentoring. As a leader I am most frustrated with the pile of required training with no time for meaningful interaction, especially when you have geographically dispersed personal.

I was in 1968 - 1972, and we had a lot of mandated training that was to check the box.

Check the box has been around since at least the 1970's SFC (Join to see) in terms of both assignments and training. Thankfully many of us did our best wherever we were assigned and were not focused on getting assignment and training merely to advance our careers.
The most important thing is taking care of your soldiers.

Yes sir, it has been around the last 21 years I have been in as well. It just seems to be increasing in the last 5 years or so.

SFC (Join to see) - that is disappointing news. I would have hoped that the check the box mentality would go the way of the dinosaur. :-)
