I am considering a transition to the reserves, and am wondering how ALC works. Currently I am attending the promotion board this month, but due to the new STEP system I feel it is highly unlikely I'll be able to get an ALC slot before my ETS in December. Can anyone provide information about ALC for the reserves, or specifically 74D ALC, and if my state has any effect (Illinois)? Thank you.

Same but you do know that if you get a slot for ALC and make points, you owe the Army 1 year from the time you get pinned.

Thank you for bringing that to my attention. I had never heard of it but you are correct (AR 600-8-19, para 3-32, for anyone wondering). I'm still pretty far off from being slotted/attending/completing ALC, passing the board, and making cut off, but if it comes up I guess I will react accordingly. Thank you again.

That's not a bad thing especially in the Reserves. It would give those attending another year of school bent paid for.

Well, in order to keep your promotion to E6, you would owe 1 year of service after being pinned. Otherwise, it CAN be taken away, although my friend in S1 says she has yet to see it happen.

The training requirements for ALC are the same for Active duty and Reserves. Unlike active duty, most reserve units do not use a Schools NCO to request schools for you once you come up on the Order of Merit List. You must be proactive and ensure you fill out the Schools Request Form for ALC. The reserve ALC is at Fort Leonard Wood, MO just like the Active Duty ALC. You will still have 3 phases as well. Go to https://www.atrrs.army.mil/atrrscc/search.aspx?newsearch=true and choose Enlisted MOS: 74D3 and School Code: L031 to find a list of ALC courses. You will then have to speak to your unit's Schools NCO or Training NCO to look up which class dates have Quotas for your unit. I suggest picking dates for all 3 phases one after another that your unit has a quota for. If not you will be placed on a wait list, or your unit will refuse to put you on orders if you are too far down on the wait list.

It works the same way, tell your training NCO that you need to be slotted for a seat and give them about the time frame you would be available and they will try to get you as close as possible to that time frame.
Seat reserve availability is usually based on so many seats for active duty, so many for the guard, and so many for the reserves.
since your getting close to ETS you may have to do a re-enlistment extension and then transfer to the reserves after ALC.
the best recommendation I can give you is to see your training NCO and your career counselor either from your current unit or from the reserve unit your looking at transferring too.

Thanks for the help. Specifically I was wondering if the reserves did some kind of split training to spread it over a period of time, since I will be going to college full time, but it looks like I'll most likely have to do it all in one shot. I would really like to get ALC complete before ETS so I won't have to work around it, but for right now I am waiting until the results of the promotion board, then I will start bugging S3 about it since I am also the Company schools NCO. (It's what I've always seen as the schools curse. I get tons of experience sending other Soldiers to schools. Never any experience sending myself haha)

SGT Hackney, you can do each phase separately, but courses are very limited. You may find yourself finishing one phase a year. There is a 24 month limit last I checked. After 24 months your previous phases expire. The exception will be if you do a phase, then you deploy.

SSG Bryan Hewitt it don’t work that way it’s n the reserves lol. Just to go tell your training NCO to skirt you lol. The reserves have the worst system ever n the world for promotion. Heck must don’t even use a order of merit list. As for the training room and operations for the reserves you might as well just forget it. Their pretty much useless. Only if the reserves had a functional orderly room for their soldiers.

TSgt (Join to see) - This is true but if it is over 2 yrs you will need to retake that phase and it is only a refresher and update class, you will not be required to retake the exams.
