When you inprocess a new unit and shuffle off to CIF, do you feel you're being issued too much gear...gear you really don't use? Gear you may eventually lose and have to pay for?

Why are Soldiers issued so much gear?

I think yes....I am an Army band trumpet player, why do I need grenade pouches and flash bang pouches?

I agree SSG Rodriguez.  I've had Soldiers that once they got to certain duty stations/assignments -ie hospital status, they turned in ALL their equipment.  I was truly surprised to know that.  This was an E7 and he said they didn't perform field duty and didn't "maintain" weapons.  So when they did their range duty they checked out equipment then and there and turned it all back in once completed.   IMO, I think that unused "issued to the band member" gear can be used towards someone who really needs it versus it just sitting in a closet somewhere.

The doctrinal mission of the band in war time is to secure the HQ they support.

SSG Hasbun, I agree with you Soldier / musician first, the only time I have seen and manage a grenade was in basic. I sure hope that I never have to use a grenade, times may have change for the worst if that happens.
On this times of economic difficulties I think that we should save money an issue equipment when is really needed. Same thinking as SSG Best; Why having equipment on a box, brand new that likely will never be use?
MSG Cunningham we can be as high speed as other MOS ;-)

Too much gear....yes.

As an Army we do a great job finding new gear to issue to everyone. We do a poor job of removing gear from the books (personal and unit equipment).

I would agree with that as I have spend the last 6 months trying to turn in outdated equipment that was removed from the books.

Yes the Army issues way too much gear. Single Soldiers in the barracks have absolutely no room as it is and now they have closets full of gear. Need to figure out a plan to write off a lot of this gear that is useless!!

If they could talk, my woodland camo LBE, desert camo LBE and assault pack, 3 marshmallow suits, two sleep systems, and footlocker full of ECWCS silks & waffle outfits would say yes.

LOL... every time I draw any kind of issue, they give more PolyPro... I think I have 4 or 5 sets, NONE of which will they ask for (or even take, believe me, i've tried) back...
