I was recently asked by a parent which branch should her son join. Her son is a high school senior determined to serve, and is asking for her advice. Here's a recent article I found that I should send to her: http://stanrmitchell.com/2013/12/06/usmc-ranked-worst-branch-to-join-and-i-love-it/

This article only cements my previous 3 decisions to become a Marine and stay a Marine x 2x.Many folks over the years have asked me why I did not join one of the other services or asked what service they should join. If they are looking for relative comfort and great duty stations and plenty of travel to Europe- I usually recommend they join the Army or Air Force. If they want cramped quarters and to smell the ocean air- I usually recommend the Navy. If they want no comfort, hand me down equipment, and want to graduate the school of hard knocks as a sadistic S.O.B.with a double major in cynicism and resourcefulness- then join the Corps. By the way- the uniform and the Embassy guards that lead "moto" runs at Jakarta International School back in 6th and 7th grade sealed my decision- no matter the MOS.
