First time PCS'ing with dependents. Read AR 600-8-10 and need more guidance on best way to utilize PTDY with PCS leave. Thank you.

I usually reserve the 10 day for arrival station. It gives me time, money for hotels and meals for 10 days.

Are you renting or purchasing? If renting, yes, going alone will be better, then bring your family after. But that depends on if you have the means to do that. If you are planning to purchase a home, the 10 days of PTDY won't be enough for you to go through the home buying process. Looking online and having a set list of places to look at is your best bet. Ask your sponsor about the best places to live around post so you don't end up somewhere with high crimes, break-ins, etc.

Once you get to the new base, report directly to the on-post housing office to get your PTDY started. Even if you're not living on post, that's normally where you get the PTDY started.

Personally, I tried to go PTDY by myself to streamline efforts and hit all the areas needed. Hopefully yall have been looking at houses on line. If not, get after it. Schools, day care and employment are other points of interest. Try to have appointments set up before you leave to expedite things and make the best use of your time.
Good luck on the move.
