Your combat patch will remain the same. Think of it as a whole unit PCS...

MAJ Hugh Blanchard - I always heard that it came from Bloody Omaha. Quite often used in RVN instead of Big.

Reminds me of when I got to Riley from Lewis thinking I'd be in 1BD ID. Turns out the unit I went to realigned to a brigade back on Lewis, so I didn't get the big red one patch. Still had to sing that stupid song every morning though...

MAJ Ronnie Reams - Well, the 1st ID patch with the Big Red One dates from the First World War, so it's probably not related to Omaha Beach, aka "Bloody Omaha."

Your right shoulder patch or combat patch (SSIFWS shoulder sleeve Insignia former wartime service) represents your personal history of service in a combat/ hostile fire pay zone. Thus it basically reflects what you wore on your left shoulder at the time when you were in the combat zone. Don't make it complicated! Over the years many units will get realigned, have different designations or even become disbanded. If your former unit got disbanded, would you take off the patch? I didn't think so!
Wear it with pride and be glad you came back alive.
