Why we need to actually read the news. Or, another one of Rocky's rants?

The headline said it was through the Washington Post, and it read, "Obama wants bergdahl to recieve Medal of Honor". And, no the proper name was not capitalized. I read, ladies and gentlemen. Any headline that catches my eye gets read at least twice - once through the link and once through another source. I clicked on the link, and was brought to a site that says, "We are sorry, but you were tricked! It was just a joke!!!" Yet, no less than FIVE people voice their dissent without even trying to read the article. And at least two people voice their dissend AFTER I informed everone on the thread that it was a joke. Have we gotten so goddam lazy that we don't even read anymore? There's your problem, America. Your citizens have become so lazy that they just read the headline and presume everything is true. THIS IS WHY WE AREN'T AS WELL INFORMED AS WE SHOULD BE! No one bothers to fact find to see if what they are hearing/reading is true.
This is why the media has no respect for the common man. This is why the feel they can feed us lies and tell us the opinion that they think we should have - BECAUSE MOST OF US FOLLOW IT AND BUY INTO IT. We say thank you for no spinning it for us, now we don't have to think for ourselves. Cool, one less thing we have to do today.
You want to take OUR country back? Start informing yourself and stop taking things for granted!

What would be your solution for those who only read headlines? Do you think that freedom of the press should come with a caveat? Should reporters be held responsible for ambiguous/slanderous/libel reports?
As a free country, we have the freedom to say almost anything we want, and we have the freedom to read or not read anything we want. This further means that those who read and attempt to understand the information presented to us, as well as do research to vet the information; will continuously need to deal with those who do not.
I do not think this is anything new; however, I think that we see surges in various generations. With the advent of twitter and like apps which force the user to understand an idea within a set amount of words, the new generation will only read the headline because they are being conditioned to only read the headline.
I would hope that as this generation matures that they can a semblance of culpability for what the read and regurgitate. But really, I do not see that happening, so we are then forced to wade through the copious piles of BS to find truth, if truth is still even considered part of responsible reporting.
