Since my suicide attempt earlier this year I have begun writing a book, based on a book of travels, but about life's journeys. I often wonder if things happen for a reason and we all have some sort of destiny prior to death, or is it all a big accident that we just have to take as it comes.

I was interested about what everyone else thinks, or if they have a different philosophy to share it.

My philosophy about life is that we are all born with the destiny of death, it is the only certainty other than taxes we have. However, I believe things happen for a reason, and that we all have a purpose in life. Our life's journey is finding our purpose and fulfilling our destiny.

Life's turns
I have always lived by a belief that life is what we make of it. We have no control over the day we are born but everything in between is entirely in our hands. The decisions we make cause our lives to change directions despite what we may have planned. Everything has a cause and effect. The picture I have attached may seem dramatic but it is a brief look at the life of a soldier and NCO I once led. I'm sure many will agree.

LCpl, it's just stuff, and there are tons of women in the world. I think of divorces as a spiritual event because I am reborn and I get to go buy new stuff.
In all seriousness though I have NEVER met a woman that is more valuable than my life. In my life the most important person is me, I don't NEED others in my life, I WANT them but I don't NEED them. If they choose to leave oh well my life will go on.
It's just my opinion but letting someone believe that I can't go on without them gives them too much power over my life.

SFC (Join to see) Thank you for the spirited response. I wish it were as easy as you just explained. I agree that letting them know empowers them. My estranged wife never knew I had attempted to kill myself until after I was out of the hospital.

In fact, the night I attempted it I was discussing some tax issues on the phone with her, I had already taken a half bottle of pills while I was talking to her.

I suppose if we could all just get over it like you explained we would not need counselors or chaplains. For a bit of background, this is my third marriage. I am not sure why this separation has got me down, but I am slowly climbing out of the rut I have been in.

I guess the question you would need to ponder is what would taking your own life do to alleviate the problem at hand? The answer is nothing. Taking your own life does not solve any problem it just gives that person an easy way out because they don't know how to cope with it. Instead it puts the problem in someone else's hands on top of dealing with the loss. That seems very selfish and inconsiderate to do to anyone.
To some people I believe chaplains and counselors are a help but in my opinion it's because they haven't developed the coping skills to handle the problem themselves.
Kids today aren't taught how to deal with adversity, they are taught to seek counseling or support groups. 2nd place didn't get a trophy in my generation, 2nd place got a chance to man up, improve and try again. We didn't have anti-bullying campaigns, we taught our kids to stand up for themselves and beat that bullies ass.
Any of my former soldiers and NCO's will tell you that if you come to me with a problem don't expect a bakers response, I don't sugar coat anything.
Suicide is as it's often quoted, A long term solution to a short term problem. Sure the subject gets away from the problem but it screws everyone else around them.

I understand what you are trying to say SFC Grudzinski. I have already answered the question about suicide earlier this year after attempting it. It was not a smart move on my part. I agree that it does not solve anything, and telling you from experience, the attempt itself created more problems in addition.
I appreciate your hard ass stance on this, but will remind you I am no longer part of the kids today. We all have different breaking points and different levels of coping skills. Some of us actually need the help of outsiders during times of great mental stress.

Lastly, I think you misunderstood my original post. AFTER, my suicide attempt I began pondering the question is life and events an accident, or do we all have a destiny. I was using my personal experiences as an example.

One more lastly. I still struggle with many things, not to the point of considering suicide though. However I do still need to seek advice and professional counseling, I guess my generation wasn't that tough. Regardless, I still do not consider myself weak because i hit bottom or because I have to seek help from a chaplain, therapist, or God. It just means I am human.

I believe that most things people intuit to be fate or fortune are really highly probable given the Law of Really Large Numbers. Luck turns around, not because of faith or destiny, but due to a principle called Regression to the Mean.

What am I saying? I'm saying outcomes are input driven, 100%. Some of those inputs you control and some you do not. But you can influence your own outcomes.

In the end, your story is your story and it will all seem to make sense in retrospect because the moments and events of your past are automatically connected to your future. It's a mathematical fact!

I am a religious person because I believe that the Torah tells me the correct way to manage my life so that I am influencing the variables toward positive outcomes. And when I break faith with that, the results are generally negative. I do not believe in the "grand design" theory or predestination. I believe that G-d has told us the answers and we are free to make our own choices. The concept of redemption is to simply say that as soon as you are willing to change your life and act right, good things will happen - again, mathematical, not divine intervention.

The quote that is meaningful to me is: "The good thing about science is that it's true whether or not you believe in it.” ― Neil deGrasse Tyson

Science is G-d acting on our world. It is both random and methodical.
