Some of the jobs in our shop require certain individuals to stick around a bit past the hours at times. Some of those individuals are always grumpy, obnoxious, and sometimes even rude.
Your job is done for today, your boss is wrapping up. Would you still leave or stick around to help them, knowing there's no rewards and a high chance of getting annoyed by them?

The job isn't done until the team is done right? At my current job, I do find myself having to put in extra hours because someone else isn't done. For example, we had to replace the Backup Power Supply in the data center. Well there were a lot of moving pieces. I stood up and took on the role as Project Manager and I told the team that we were all in until everything checked out 100% and I'm glad we worked like that. We had an issue where even though the Backup Power Supply was in and 99% of everything was working right, our Network Engineer saw an issue and it took us a few extra minutes to work together to resolve it. If one of us would have left, it would have taken a lot longer to correct. So stick around and help out. Take things one step further and continue to push on. Does it suck? Sure does but then again, not everything in life results in rewards.

Thank you SGT Ben Keen, great points. Seems like keeping everyone put is one of the best motivators out there. Trying to find other means to motivate juniors before it gets to this point

Motivating juniors can be one of the hardest things for any leader PO1 (Join to see). I know as a young Solider I hated staying late. LOL

Helping the boss is part of the job. Gotta make them look good to complete the mission. Now if it is school or something like that then ask them if they need anything else. If they say no you asked and you get to go home.

LTC (Join to see), I concur with making the boss look good. But you also got those disgruntled workers who do practically nothing but occupy space and suck out the tax payers money.
How can you motivate them to work with a purpose without being a nuisance? Those that always compare themselves to others or other commands?

PO1 (Join to see) you can lead by example but some you just have to try and if it does not work out do not burn yourself out in the process. You cannot save them all.

Good stuff, sir. Sometimes in situations like this I just thank God for a steady job and getting paid on the 1st and 15th. Just wish I could feel more pride of team accomplishment instead of being in the lime light
