Marginal 1059 while attending Drill Sergeant School

I received a marginal 1059 while attending Drill School in
2011. I went unto the Trail and did really well. While on the trail I won Drill Sergeant of the cycle twice and got great (1 over 1 NCOERs. This pass board was my first look at E8 and I did not make it. I was wondering could it have been because of the marginal that I have received. I have only been in the Army for a total of 11 years. In my 11 years in that is the only bad mark that I ever had in my career. Please let me know what you think.

1SG (Join to see) - as stated by a few others, not sure if it hurt you, but it didn't help you.
You have to figure, how many other SFCs had a marginal 1059 - probably not a lot? If there were a sufficient amount of records that the last 5 NCOERS were all really good, then marginal 1059s and other things would be a significant discriminator as that may have been the thing that made you "different" than the others.

1SG (Join to see) - The 1059 does not solely affect your chances for promotion. These is what affect your promotion ;TIS, TIG, the zone that you were looked at, how many E8s in your MOs, E8P not promoted to 9 which in turn the E7P were not promoted , as well as the budget since Seniors are promoted through Department of the Army. This the kind of information that affect Senior promotions , so one marginal 1059 is not a promotion breaker. Keep your head up continue your knowledge, train Soldiers and be the great leader that you are.

Did you not read the posters question? He asked whether his marginal 1059 affected him getting selected. That was the question I answered.
Additionally, it doesn't sound like you have sat on a selection board since you mention TIS/TIG/Zone as discriminators (board members don't care about those). Folks are not divided up by those criteria with select objectives for each. If you meet the requirements, you are graded from first to last as a group in your MOS, not by TIS/TIG/Zone. After the results are released, HRC folks break down the selects/non-selects into those groups just so you can kind of compare yourself, but honestly, those things matter very little - it is the NCOERs that get you selected, everything else is icing on the cake.

CSM Mike Maynard - You tackled exactly what I was about to address. NCOERs, specifically Sr Rater comments, carry the most weight. Correct me if I'm wrong, but TIS/TIG are only metrics to determine eligibility - they have no bearing on whether you are rated 5+ or 2+. After the board rank orders all eligible candidates, determines best qualified vs. highly qualified vs. fully qualified lines, then HRC determines the number to be promoted and draws the line in the sand.

1SG (Join to see) - You are exactly correct - there is no scoring on TIS/TIG, those are only determined for the board message to determine eligibility. After the scoring, everyone is ranked first to last and that list is given to HRC who determines the cut-line based on the number of folks needed at the next higher grade in that MOS.

I don't think the marginal 1059 mattered much. I attended Drill Sergeant school in 2003, was very successful on the trail, and received a very good 1059. I deployed 3 times, did 5 years Airborne duty, was a 2ID reception NCO, BN Commo NCO, plans NCO, master driver, SCCC qualifies, and much more and was never selected. I finally retired in 2011, with out ever getting selected. Oh and also PT score always above 290.
And, I'm hispanic !!!

Totally agree with you brother !! Don't give up, and think allow the motivational snipers take pop shots at you. All we can do as Warriors is keep our heads up and keep slinging rounds.

A marginal 1059 is def something that can hinder a promotion. I ask though, have you completed your SLC since DS School? If so what was that 1059 like? I am currently an instructor at a NCOA and I know 1059's from an NCOES is def a big deal when it comes to promotion boards.
