So, assuming height/weight, APFT GO, what is the maximum waiverable age for a prior service person?

Assume 8 years Guard time, 1 deployment to Iraq, 43 YOA, separated as an O2 but would want to go the NCO route. Oh, and 30% med disability, including hearing loss corrected with hearing aids.

In the opinion of the knowledgeable people out there, is it even worth trying?

Here's another question: my last rank held as an enlisted soldier was SPC. Is it more likely that I'd go back in as a SPC, or might OCS count as an equivalent to WLC and bump me to SGT?

Yes, OCS gives you primary (WLC) NCOES credit.

AR 601-280 (do you love all these regs?) covers retention and para 3-13 specifically deals with enlisting former officers. Bottom line is that the local recruiter you will be dealing with is authorized to enlist you as an SGT after coordination with HRC.

You can also submit a request for rank determination that goes up to HRC to be brought in at a higher rank (consideration is given for your officer rank, what jobs you had, military training, etc). Just a gut feel, but I doubt it would be likely that you would be brought in higher than an E5 though.

Dunno if I would want to be.

I have handled PL, XO and Rear Det CO, and was in charge of 2 Det Ops platoons in OIF. However, having zero NCO time would likely set me up for trouble and be a disservice to my soldiers.

1LT Nick Kidwell, AR 601-210 is your friend in this situation. Specifically, chapter 3 which deals with enlistments for those with prior service.

The only age restriction with the RC is that you must be able to qualify for retired pay by age 62. Assuming those are all 8 good years, you should have no problem.

Were you discharged for medical reasons previously? If so, then you'll need a waiver to reenlist (assuming the condition that you were discharged for before isn't a factor anymore).

If not, your 30% disability shouldn't be a factor as long as you meet the physical requirements - but since you separated in 2007, you'll have to do a full physical again.

Sorry, I don't tend to have have much need for the ARs as a veteran. I presume it's available online somewhere.

No, I was not a Med discharge. I voluntarily separated. My medical rating came after.

By 8 "good" years, does that mean full-time AD, or no negative actions? I had a good service record, never so much as an Art 15, but for most of those 8 years I was a drilling NG soldier. I did have some ADSW, AD for training, and of course a deployment.

Just google "AR 601-210" and you should be able to find it.

A "good" year is a year in which you accumulated at least 50 points for retirement. If you were drilling normally, those 8 years should be "good" years.

Bottom line, age-wise you should be good. Next step is to confirm all records and enlistment criteria and LTC (Join to see) is right on the next step - talk to a recruiter.

I think it may be helpful if you had gotten our recently. How long ago did you get out? What MOS are you looking at going into as NCO and which component?

Well, I got out in 2007. MOS is pretty open, as beggars can't be choosers. I was a ChemO before I left service.

As far as branch/component, I'm most familiar with the ARNG, but at this point I'm just seeing what is even possible.

Might as well look up a recruiter in the area then and ask them. It is too far of a time out to go to retention.

I may just do that. I'm able to ask questions on here without leaving my desk at work. I'm also able to ask questions on here without feeling I'm wasting a recruiters time or getting their hopes up needlessly if I decide to not re-enlist.
