How does the story of Dante's Inferno relate to today's thoughts of christianity and religion?

I think that Dante's tale needs to be updated with another circle of Hell, one reserved for politicians.

If I remember correctly, liars and deceivers were on the second or third to worst level.

It creates the popular conception of hell despite there being no physical description in the Bible if I recall correctly.

I remember something about brimstone and there being separate levels. In the final stage, those in Hell suffered alongside the Devil. The story had multiple levels determined by your primary or most common sin.

If you were to update Dante's Inferno today, the only thing that would change would be the circles of hell and those in them. Dante based the circles of hell and those in them based on what he perceived to be the worst crimes. For example, he thought that corrupt popes deserved to be in the lowest pits of hell, so today you might replace the pope with a corrupt president.
