What will do you facing a disaster? Tsunami, hurricane, tornado, earthquake, forest fires, riots, massive prolonged power outage, disease, war, nuclear strikes? Do you have enough food and water for yourself and your family? Transportation? Money on hand? Self defense and protection? Does your family have a plan?

I was in CA for 2 big earthquakes. I was fortunate and never sustained any damage and didn't need to break into my earthquake kit. Unfortunately there is no evacuation plans when the big one hits. You just hope you can access your supplies after the quake.

To expand on your comments (also been through a few earthquakes in Southern California). To enhance access to critical items, its suggested that they be stored near an exterior wall. In the event the house collapses, you can cut through the wall and retrieve the items.
