Leadership Training varies, though most cover similar topics. Which leadership training do you believe is most effective overall?

SGT (Join to see) OJT. Nothing beats on the job training. Courses can teach theories, but nothing prepares you for leadership so much that you can just walk into the job and be like I got this and do a great job. You have to bring your leadership style and be willing to learn and develop.

Having been through ALC, ALS, NCOPEC, and a course in supervising civilians the one thing I can say for certain is to treat others how you want to be treated. The "do as I say, not as I do" never works because you see for yourself it doesn't work, but so do your subordinates if you try it with them. Be the example. I'm not saying be "perfect", but don't be afraid to admit your shortcomings and work on them-actively and publicly. Those will garner more respect than aNY thing else. ALS attempts to right the wrongs and misinformation that most young junior enlisted have seen and heard, but most people walk out of it and forget everything they learned and back to business as usual once theye returned to their shops. I think some of it has to do with enlisted leaders doing the same and shouting about how it's all theory, it's useless, and that's not the way things are done here...because it undermines how they have been conducting themselves aND suddenly they hAve to become acountable to those lower ranking than they. ALS can be the most helpful courses if you take it to heart and apply what you learn. ALS actually gives you basic tools on how to take care of your people as well as how to deal with some common infractions as a young supervisor. Just my 2 cents.

For me, at first I thought it was BLC that was most effective until I went to ALC. For me, it was ALC that really taught me what I knew and what I thought I knew, and then set me straight.
