What employment difficulties have you had after leaving the service?

Having been a paralegal with the military and having a Bachelors degree in paralegal studies, I found that I was either told that I was over qualified or that my experience was just in the won't field of law. So I decided to continue my education and got a Master's degree in business administration. I thought this would make me more marketable, yet here I am still unemployed. It sends that no matter what I do I am overqualified and have to much education so people are afraid to hire me for fear that I will find something better and they will have to how someone again. Does anyone else have a similar expertise with transitioning to civilian employment? Or any ideas that would help?

You aren't alone my brother. I'm in the same boat except my masers is in psychology. I fear that it may be in part because I am 20 years older than people with the same experience. Just keep an eye on USAjobs if you want those federal/state govt jobs.

Never let your guard down SFC (Join to see) .You have to check those websites every day. When they have to find someone ASAP they only advertise for 7 days and then it's too late. HR is a pain in the A$$ too. Try to find a previous job announcement and use THEIR job description as your experience. I swear the computer does a key word search only. They don't understand MOS's, military acronyms, and common sense is questionable. Good luck, brother.

There is a sub base in Georgia, have you tied packaging your self for that area? It would seem that folks in that area might have an interest in your area. I obviously am not army but someone with your background might find something either with a contractor or with the base itself. Do you want to stay in Georgia? I went through what you guys are going through now but that was several days ago. Now I am retired. Just thinking , hate to see talent and training go to waste

I'm right with you, brother. I have a graduate degree and managed to snag a job teaching on campus, but it's for less than I've made in 15 years. Better than nothing.

I am relatively new to the site, but older than dirt. Just out of curiosity what are you teaching? The only reason I ask is that it seems that there ought to be a need for a linguist but aside from that I see some of the local colleges are starting to teach courses leading to a degree in Homeland Security. It seems as if you with some of the other guys in this whatever the correct term is could put together a credible curriculum and push it at the college where you are teaching. One of you could be the department head the others could teach within their disciplines. Otherwise I have some friends with No Such Agency I could put you in touch with, see if they know some places. I am not a recruiter, I am just a twice retired (Navy and civilian life) Navy guy.
