Army is suggesting longer periods between promotions.  Will this recommendation assist with better preparing our junior Soldiers for leadership?

You cannot expect a Team Leader to be fully matured. Their TEAM LEADERS, first foray into leadership. I got promoted very fast and always wonder if I was ready. That was answered in ALC and SLC where I was well above my peers.

This is a very good thing to come in play.  With the last 10 years of conflict we have seen a very rapid rise of promotions with out consideration as to what the person can do ability wise and maturity.

If the problem, as you say, is the "rapid rise of promotions with out consideration as to what the person can do ability wise and maturity" -- then why is the answer to just make them wait longer?&nbsp;<div><br></div><div>If the problem is lack of ability, we should address the problem and promote more based on ABILITY, not more based on TIME. This is the classic difference of opinion on a "train to time" or "train to standard" mentality.&nbsp;</div><div><br></div><div>If we just make people wait longer to get promoted, we will likely end up promoting the same people who now just had a longer time period to reinforce bad habits.&nbsp;</div><div><br></div><div>I say we address the problem... which is like you said, people getting promoted when they are not ready, independent of time. Just promoting people slower does not address the real problem.</div>

That is a leadership problem. I've been retired for 14 years, but soldiers still have to be recommended for promotion, don't they?

Experience I think is more important than test taking or a PT score. Sound decisions making cant always be learned in a Book, That's why we Have Officers, they out Rank their seasoned SSgt's, but lack the experienced NCOs point of view. Don't make em wait for the sake of waiting- With-in the NCO corps, College has become a huge promotion area, but I can't tell you how many NCO's jumped over me due to 4 years of college, but needed my help to learn their positions.

<p>After witnessing the, degredation of the NCO Corps over the past 8-10 years due to the rapid promotion of people to SGT and above, I applaud the "Big Army's" decision to lengthen the time between promotions. Now, while there are exceptions to every rule, all Soldiers and Junior NCOs need the time to learn their MOSs and to get "seasoned", and that requires time. I always tried to ensure that I trained my crewman to be able to do all jobs on the tank, but as I would tell them, before you can move up you have to know and be able to do the job you are currently in. You can't be a gunner on the tank if you don't know how to be a loader or a driver first. While I applaud all that want to and deserve to move up in rank, position and/or authority, there needs to be that timeframe between ranks to ensure that Soldiers/NCOs are ready and can do the jobs!</p><p>"Treat 'Em Rough!!"</p>
