As a soldier in the MT National Guard can I live and work in Canada?

I am considering applying for a job within my company that is about 4 hours north of the border. Is there any rule saying I can't do this as long as I make it to drill every month?

Ask the MT ARNG if they give lodging in kind or mileage for driving to and from drill. I am in the USAR and I file a local voucher each month since the USAR has a maximum of $300 reimbursement. If not, see if your unit can give you free lodging. If not, can you stay with someone in your unit at their house to save on lodging. In my case, I stay at my Mom's house 75 miles away from the unit. I fly 1600 miles each way to drill and back. Edmonton, Alberta to Palm Springs or Santa Ana, California and back each month and when I go to schools (CGSOC), deployments (OEF) or A.T. orders (usual 14 or 15 A.T. orders). The MTARNG will not have a problem with schools, a.t. orders or deployments. ESGR may not apply unless you are actually working for the U.S. company. I have my Teamsters Union back me up because I was hired as a reservist and they knew when I was hired of my drill weekends. 4 months after I was hired, I was mobilized for Afghanistan. I just barely made probation. I just filed a drop card from the union. I did not have to pay dues and my seniority continued while I was deployed. Not sure about your situation. I just am giving you my experience. I hope you can look into this. I know the CA ARNG does not help soldiers with driving or flying from out of state.

SFC (Join to see) - I added more. I am brainstorming. I am learning from this also since my case is unique. I am a Canadian resident alien. I am about 10 hours from the border. It is too far to drive for me even if I had to drill at Malmstrom AFB in Great Falls. I suspect he is going to work in Calgary which is not so bad in the summer and fall but the winters can be really hairy to drive on highway 15 South of the border.

SPC (Join to see) Thank you for sharing, this is an interesting topic considering I'm currently in the MN ARNG a move to Canada would not be out of the option for me... pending the wife's permission of course.

I'm digging into my mental file box and am aware of two things. First, I presume your company is a US based outfit that just happens to have an office in Canada. Good for your USERRA thing. The second thing to take a look at is if there is any foreign interest you're involved in that's reportable from a conflict or security perspective. It's always best to check with JAG and the Security Office verify there isn't a problem. That way you avoid hidden land mines. Lots of folk flip over the borders for their jobs so if you get a Seabee Salute (shrugged shoulders), then your resources are faulty. They are expected to know this stuff. BTW it isn't a call by the internal CoC on whether or not they like the idea of where you work either. One warning. Expect to have things go into the toilet at the border at some point when you need to make your drill on occasion. Be prepared to offset it when it happens.
