Career Progression: Get promoted as soon as you are eligible both in time and points, or wait?

How long do you feel one should be of a particular rank before submitting a promotion packet? Should one try to get promoted as soon as they have enough points and TIG/TIS or should it be based on the amount of experience they have at that rank? My thoughts are a bit of both. If they have the points, the time, and have the leadership ability and experience, then go for it as soon as you're ready.

SSG Toryn Green, I feel the same way. When I decided to apply to become a warrant officer, I was conflicted. On the one hand, I felt unqualified (inferiority complex, I guess). On the other, I saw others who were no more qualified than I was going for it. After a short time, I decided to go for it too, and that was a good decision. I like your statement -- "leadership ability and experience, then go for it as soon as you're ready." If you're not ready, the Army (or Service) will likely let you know.

Thank you for the comments. I just looked at the latest slotting report and see that for 88Ns that are getting their 6, most have 200-300 points. I have not been an E-5 for very long, but I have 456 points according to the DA-3355 for SSG. I have a bachelor's, have completed all levels of SSD, combat experience as a Corporal, and I am maxed out on correspondence courses for SSG. I am debating whether or not to submit a packet as soon as I hit my TIG or wait. I have talked to NCOs in my old unit and they are advising that I go for it as soon as possible, I just want to make sure I'm ready. They told me that there really isn't that much difference between SGT and SSG in terms of responsibility. I feel that I'm ready, but I want to make sure I'm doing the right thing for my career in the long term, not just now.

If I were you, SSG Toryn Green, I would go for it. You sound motivated and smart to me. I submit that you will succeed as a SSG (and beyond).
