What are some things that you wish you had known regarding Non-Lethal Weapons and Civil Disturbance when you were a new Soldier?

As Army National Guard Soldiers, we are taught Civil Disturbance Riot Control several times in our careers. I am starting a training program for my state and I'd like to know if there's anything that I haven't covered that I should.

Anything that would have been better than shooting the foreign citizen protester in the butt with a M1911 in an overseas location serious no-no area that resulted in a media firestorm well over 40 years ago. Even if you follow the ROE, a better solution cuts down the external crapanoia.
