I always get mine. I work at the VA hospital in Tucson and I get it not for my protection but for the protection of the veteran patients I serve everyday. By me staying healthy I hopefully wont pass anything on to them when their immune system may be weak.

My annual check up at the VA is in the fall and I get it then. I won't say that the flu shot is a must, but what I will say is that ever since they stopped using the live virus, I have not had a sick day where I had to take off from work. I retired from teaching with 30 years behind me and in all those years I only took sick leave when I had a regular medical appointment...never because I was sick. I believe it did protect me and more importantly, it protected the students from me. I retired with enough sick leave (the state allowed the accumulation sick leave) that I had enough days that the state gave me two years extra credit towards retirement and paid me for almost a year's worth. Not until last year did I miss work due to illness (I was working part-time). Since 1975 I have missed a total of 3 days work due to illness.

The last time I had the flu shot was 2001 until 2011. I didn't want one then, but the VA doc said, "We're going to give you a flu shot." I said no, and he told me that he was going to order it, so I had to take it.
At the time, I did not realize that I had the choice. And I got sick. I've had doctors, nurses, and others tell me that "the flu shot doesn't make you sick!" But the only time I've ever gotten sick is when I get the flu shot. Go figure.

Every time I've taken the flu shot I've gotten sick within days. The correlation? r=1.0.
I've heard all the explanations. I've heard the denials that it is even possible. All I know is that I've gotten the flu every time I've taken the shot, and I haven't had the flu since just after the last flu shot.

We have a choice?! Damn it, everyone in my unit has gotten it and I've always been against it. Next time I'm going to research the regs on it. I never got it before the military and never got sick.

I think it is sad that when it comes to the flu shot they do not explain the side effects very well. They like to say it will not make you sick, and what they need to say is it will not give you the flu. If you feel kind of crappy, but still make it into work, you probably do not have the flu. Also it takes two weeks for immunity to mature, and often times people will get the flu the next day, this is not the exposure that infected them.
I will be getting mine as soon as a free option comes available; which is any day now.
