I have roughly 8.5 years in and am heading to ALC in the next 2 weeks. I was considering quite seriously moving to Warrant Officer until a friend (also an enlisted 12Y) almost talked me out of it saying if you don't make CW4 prior to retirement (or being forced out) you retire as the rank you came into Warrant as. Should I stay enlisted or keep pursuing Warrant? Planning a career in the Army.

What is your opinion of being a MOS12 Y geospatial engineer. Did you enjoy it did you have a good experience and why would you want to leave that particular job

Even though I am no longer active duty and was enlisted, I would strongly suggest talking with someone of greater rank than what you are now or plan on attaining; i.e. CW-whatever. If what was being told on some other responses is, if true, as long as you attained say CW3 and were that for at least 3 years you'd retire as CW3. I'm not sure how long you plan on staying in but you still have 21.5 years remaining should you decide to retire with 30 years - which I would do if you went to the Warrant Officer side of things. Even with WOCS I would think you'd be able to obtain CW4 with no problem given that much time remaining and possibly CW5 and maybe even Command Chief Warrant Officer 5 if you "play the game." - just my thoughts!

You retire at the rank you are when you leave the force.
