This could be largely a rhetorical issue, since the terms kind of blend, between that of our own intrinsic self-esteem and that of other people from other countries. It is no wonder that people prefer to the U.S.A, including Mexico, The Far East and Pacific Island Chains and countless others. Or why Australia, New Zealand and Britian has the influx they do.

Do you think our perceived exceptionalism unites us or hold us back? When I was in school, we honored our country by the Pledge of Allegiance to our United States, battled racism, assassinations and things like the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Some say that we are the great oppressor and I find it particularly depressing that it took a Canadian to cover our backsides. Ronald Reagan did a lot of repair to the services in terms of pay and prestige. The next time you bash him then remember your pay is directly related to what was done for us and the idea that you can walk the streets and not be shunned.

Americans codified an attempt to limit government and trust individuals to govern themselves. Inasmuch as we are the first and only ones to make the attempt, we are exceptional.

Yes, I suspect that there will be some who will challenge my assertion, but I wouldn't make it if I weren't prepared to defend it, so bring it on.

Have we succeeded? Not completely, but some have made a valiant attempt. In the beginning, our society and our economy were hugely successful. Sadly we lost our way in a wave of progressivism in the past century that has inspired us to implement statist experiments that have been tried and failed countless times in Europe and Asia. We are now left with a bloated federal bureaucracy and over achieving central government that are about as useful as buggy whips on a Maserati. Sad...

I would like to take the time to make an analogy. A sports team gets an encouraging talk before the game. I think that a coach says tell them how great they are in contrast to how much they suck and that their mothers are ugly.

Right now we are living in a Carteresque time where it is fashionable to bash ourselves. No decent President tells his own people (United States) that they have not a reason to be proud.

Once we figure this out again, the pendulum swings back to a nation who has a common purpose. Whether or not we are not all that or a feeling of that, we strive to exceptionalism. Now we need to get back to the line of scrimmage and we can.

I think we are getting away from exceptionalism and going to what can someone do for me.
