I enlisted in the Army in May of 2009. Of course, I cannot speak for all BCT stations, but mine, specifically, Fort Benning, GA. was intense. I was taught by Drill Sergeants who were hard, but fair. They were "old school" Drill Sergeants. If you messed up, you would know. Discipline was key, attention to detail was key, pride in uniform and country was key. We weren't allowed to have flavored drinks, no electronics, no cell phones (besides the day before Graduation, for 10 minutes), etc..I say all of that to say that when I left Fort Benning, I lived every day as if my DSs were watching. Fast forward a year or so, when I get to my first unit, Jan '10. From the moment I walked through the doors, I could tell that discipline lived there. If you were a PFC, youd better be standing at parade rest for the Specialist, so on and so forth. The usual antics went on with the new Soldiers in the unit (made to look for grid squares, prick E7s, prick E-8s, squelch oil, blinker fluid, etc.) and no one ever had an issue...this was a norm in the Army as we all understood and accepted with no issues. Fast forward 12 months in Iraq, we return from deployment to new Soldiers, new 1SG, new CO from Rear D who have NO DISCIPLINE. They complain about work, they hide in their rooms at the barracks, speak with disrespect to NCOs and Officers alike. Problem, you bet. As a now Specialist, I took it upon myself to square these Soldiers away the only way I knew how. I taught first, always gave purpose, motivation and direction..and when Joe messed up, Joe got taught a lesson. I was received with praise from my seniors. I received accolades for doing the right thing, for making on the spot corrections, and ALWAYS being right before I made any correction. I was treated as if I was an NCO even though I was not. And I behaved as an NCO, even though I was not. From my understanding, why should a SPC go to the promotion board if he wasn't displaying the attitude, qualities, and abilities of an NCO? A few months down the road, I notice that some of my NCOs were getting complacent..1SG is around less and less, and now, Im a target for those NCOs and Soldiers who didn't approve of me. 1SG begins to side with the Soldiers more than his NCOs. In return, Soldiers now know that 1SG is on their side, and continue with wayward behavior. At the same time, 1SG tells us "square your Soldiers away, counsel em, paperwork paperwork paperwork"...check roger trackin. We do our job, we do the counselings, we do the papework...turn it in to 1SG..he dismisses it. Now we have a problem. Trust and confidence is ruined from 1SG to NCOs because he doesn't do anything about the morale, and Soldiers don't trust the NCOs because we are doing what we do fix their "issues". Soldiers nowadays are getting away with way too much in my opinion. By no means am I "old school", but I was definitely taught by the "old school". Im on my 2nd duty station now, and I am a young Sergeant who wants to know, HOW do we fix this issue with Soldiers not having these standards ? In a recent NCODP with our BN CSM, he says we have to start all over. And I understand to a degree...I've learned and experience firsthand that whatever my NCO did, I copied. So if we want the change to occur, we, as Leaders, must be the change. But my question is HOW? How do we accomplish this when we can no longer apply the methods taught to us ? We live in an Army where these Soldiers don't care if they get a negative counseling statement, they don't care if we start paperwork for the article..why? Because they know what we can do. Extra duty? Sure, only until 2300. Joe will BS the entire time no matter how many times you inform them the task was not performed to standard, no matter how many times you do this, or that. And when you keep Joe a minute pass the time, off to IG he goes. Whether or not the complaint is valid, this hurts the unit. So, again, I ask, in an Army where the Soldiers have no little to no discipline, complain to IG, to the chaplain, to SSG/SFC/1SG XYZ, basically do everything short of walking up to your DIV CG..how do we resolve this issue ? I am not saying ALL Soldiers are like this of course, but there is a good percentage of them who hurt the unit, and the Army!

This is nothing new as it is just the newest version of it, the military itself is always going through with newest growing pains from implemented changes and guidelines.

We as NCOs are the ones that have to further educate not only ourselves but those that we lead and guide, this is to include junior officers and NCOs that are new not only to the ranks but to the changes within the Army. Being that the military is labeled as having much more intelligent and stronger individuals than when I first came in, the adaption phase is supposed to be easier and much quicker to accomplish, now whether this is the case or not is up to the beholder.

I wish you good luck and continued success with your career and your decision/learning skills and capabilities.

My drill sergeants in the Army were former Marines, some served in Vietnam. I learned much from them. I would say build on that knowledge and listen to what they say.

SFC Childs, things are going well. Since that post, I've experienced and learned alot. All to make me that much more of a better leader. I will soon be PCSing, but hopefully I will still be around by the time you get here. I would assume that you will be taking the 1SG position for our FSC. The BN as a whole is a great unit, but there are things that we need to improve on. The FSC work hard day in and day out to accomplish the mission, but from my perspective, we lack the funding and equipment needed to operate at our best. Example, we done have any track mechanics in the FSC (from what I know), and while we do have wheeled mechanics, we have Bradley that need to be fixed. So for now we take the Brads to the BSB. Great unit, looking forward to meeting you!
