Should a Kuwait deployment in support of Operation Spartan Shield (2015?) be reflected in Block 18 of a DD214?

I've seen several Block 18s filled out that include "Service in Kuwait YYYYMMDD-YYYYMMDD". AR 635-8, para 5-6 just specifies deployment and not specifically "combat" deployment. My separations clerk says Kuwait deployments don't get delineated in Block 18. Anyone else run into this situation? Is it because OSS isn't a contingency operation? Any ideas on references for this? Thanks.

CPT D F, I was in 3/4ID and we deployed to Kuwait for 6 months right after 9/11. My Block 18 states what you wrote above with no delineation. I don't think our deployment had an operational name other than our Task Force name.

LTC (Join to see) Sir, those Kuwait deployments were called Operation Desert Spring. I part of the last one before OIF I.
Operation Desert Spring was part of an ongoing operation in Kuwait by the United States that was established on December 31, 1998, following Operation Desert Storm and Operation Desert Shield. The mission objective is to maintain a forward presence and provide control and force protection over the military of Kuwait.
Operation Desert Spring ended with the beginning of Operation Iraqi Freedom on 18 March 2003.
Participants in Operation Desert Spring are entitled to receive the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal.

I deployed there in 2012Apr-Oct, and Operation New Dawn (OND) which incorportated Kuwait had just wound down. It was thereafter encorporated into Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF), which was on Block 18 with that delineation. I think now it is called Operation Spartan Shield? The evolution of military acronyms continues, lol.

When I was there in 2015-2016 it was under OEF-SS. It is on block 18 of my DD214. There may be a difference between how it is associated with NG and RA, since for the RA Kuwait is a hardship duty location. That is the only thing I can think of for it not being on block 18 of your DD214.

Perhaps. I am active duty...are you NG/R? I wonder if this might be the case. Does yours specifically say “ORDERED TO ACTIVE DUTY IN SUPPORT OF (OPERATION NAME) PER 10 USC (applicable section).” That is what the NG/Reserves verbiage is supposed to look like per AR 635-8. I too was there from AUG15-FEB16.

Yes I am NG. My orders were in fact stated that way, the operation was Operation Enduring Freedom-Spartan Shield. which is why it is denoted in block 18 of my DD214. I was under ARCENT and worked in the DIS office.
