My wife and I are OEF/OIF veterans. We founded Compass Quest Veteran Services (http://www.compassquest.org) as a peer mentoring nonprofit for fellow vets in our region. We try to address the many aspects of veteran wellness to include meaningful post-service employment. We have forged partnerships with local businesses and the Chamber of Commerce to help educate employers on the importance of hiring veterans not only because of their skills but also because of those value added experiences of teamwork, loyalty, sense of mission and purpose. We hold quarterly meetings with these partners through our Joining Community Forces Council. We are also actively recruiting transitioning military members and their families to look at our community as a destination upon separation or retirement. Our campaign includes a website (http://www.welcomehometojoplin.com); collateral literature and site visits at base and post career and education fairs.

Service member is still in the uniformed military. I am both a veteran (served on active duty and later honorably discharged) and a service member (drilling part-time in selected reserves).

Yeah, I know all that. It’s all about perspective and terminology. Legally, one only transitions once. Unless you agree, this debate is moot. So, if that is the case, how is it a veteran and a service member, both being in the position of “prior to discharge from the service,” have different titles? BTW, you are serving member only, if you buy into the distinction of this posting member AND Rally Point. (My main point is the wording of the question creates a false narrative.)
