Perception is reality. Cigarettes are persona non grata in the modern military. Smoking is seen as a negative quality. Your avatar is a pic of you smoking with sunglasses...on a military social media website. If perception is reality, and you are being put in for a competitive award and all I have is a packet put in front of me and I given the opportunity to check you out...I'd say no...too much "cool guy", not enough experience, counters the image that we want to promote for prestigious awards....doesn't matter if you have valor awards and are literally the best soldier in your unit...because image matters more than substance.

Noted, SFC. I suppose it has been due for an upgrade in these days of social media transparency.

What is this award? Google showed the Spirit of Independence award but that seems highly unlikely as it has been awarded to John Wayne, Bob Hope, the Doolittle Raiders, and other very high profile folks.

You wouldn’t put me into the same category as John Wayne, sir? Haha in all seriousness, I’ve only been able to discover the same results. I spoke with my CO and he essentially equated it to the De Fleury Medal. I assume they chose the GEN Omar Bradley Award since we’re a mechanized BEB with BFVs.
