I read somewhere that a few years ago the higher ups ended SF's relaxed grooming standards. Is that true?

Relaxed grooming standards are contingent on the mission. There is no blanket policy that pairs a long tab with a beard. Most of your time in the Army (even post Q), you’ll be expected to maintain Army Standards. That doesn’t mean the High & Tight or the Ft Benning Cue ball, but certainly a professional appearance, fitness, and bearing. When the opportunity does arrive to stow the clippers and razor, it will be for a set time period and purpose. A deployment, a school, a training event, etc. There are career opportunities that may exempt Army Grooming standards entirely, but you aren’t going to get the details on those jobs on RallyPoint. Get through the Q, make a good impression to your team, and doors will start opening to different levels. Just remember that green hat you are working to earn is only a “leaner’s permit.” Good Luck!

The Q is only to see where you stand as a Soldier, training commences upon donning the Green Beret...

No. It's all mission dependent and up to the commanders discretion. You really should not be overly concerned with that though.

I find it rather funny that these soldiers think that SF guys just run around with shaggy hair and beards just because they can. It really makes me wonder what other kind of stupid crap they believe that they just haven't vomited out yet.
