Are you allowed to retake the ASVAB if you don't meet the score requirement for the MOS you want?

I was wondering are you allowed to retake the ASVAB is you dont meet the score requirement for the MOS you want? I want to go into the reserves and get an MOS that will benefit me with my business and help with my civilian life. Looking for any kind of excavation stuff. I was told that the base i am looking at going into has equiptment operator. I would really like this that way it can help me with my civilian life as a business owner and give me further schooling and experience in my trade. But if i dont meet the score requirements am i allowed a retake or is it SOL. If im not allowed a retake will i be able to turn back and not continue with the USMC and just say ah not for me right now. Or am i commited once i sighn up for MEPS? I talked a little bit to my recruiter about the ASVAB I took at school just cause and told him i scored vary poorly. He said not to worry that their was and easier test i could take that was like the ASAB anyone know what he is talking about? Is it easier to score higher and more likely to help you get the MOS you want. Anyone know of any other excavation type jobs besides equiptment operator?

It normally stands for 2yrs I think. You do not have to go past taking the test. Your test results will tell the Services where to put you- we are not concerned with your life in the civilian world nor insuring your business growth. That may sound hard, but we are here for the service to the Nation, not personal gain. If that bothers you, then this life is not for you.

I only say that because i heard reservists get to pick their mos and is meant so that they can apply it to a civilian carrer while also serving their country. Thats one of the things they seem to peddle in those recruitment commercials is how much it can benefit u in the civilian world.

Your ASVAB score is what it is. I believe you can retake it after 2 years for an improvement. It cost the government money to administer that test and it isn't cheap. So they will not let you retest if you passed. As for this easy test, no idea what your recruiter is talking about. Everyone must take and pass the ASVAB.

Thankyou for your response. I know that the ASVAB is broke up into several parts. The MOS i want is equiptment operator. I looked it up and it says i need atleast a 95 on the mechanical portion i believe. On the ASVAB. Lets say i completely bomb the ASVAB but meet the 95 requirement on that section can i still pick that MOS or do the other scores dictate what MOS i am eligable for.

Conner Fleury - at least for the Marines, you required an over all AFQT of 31 to pass. If you got below and still managed a 95, sorry no. It will still be a fail.

Oh so even tho u need to get a higher score for a certain mos. U still have a minimum requirement for all the other subjects to even pass.

Not sure if it's any different for the USMC, but for the Army you have no obligation until you sign your contract at MEPS. You could literally do everything at MEPS, get to the part where you sign your contract, change your mind and go home. Especially if that contract didn't have what you wanted. Don't sign anything that doesn't explicitly state that you're getting exactly what you asked for.
As far as an easier test, I'm not sure. I'd imagine you'd just have to retake the ASVAB and score higher. There are all kinds of test-prep books available to help you get the scores you need for the job you want. Best of luck to you!

Thankyou for your response. So once you are sworn in at MEPS that is the point of no return? I heard that you swear in one last time before basic. What is this for if their is no going back after MEPS. If i do decide to no swear in and go home. Is their a grace period i have to wait until I can re enlist or is it a one shot deal.

I signed two contracts and swore in twice before I actually left for basic. The first was a contract for delayed enlistment set for 35 days later, and the second was my actual enlistment contract. I'm not an expert in the subject, but I would say the point of no return is once you sign the delayed enlistment contract. You have no obligation to sign that if you don't feel comfortable about what is in that contract or don't feel you've gotten what you wanted. You can go back to MEPS another day and try again. Once you've signed and raised your right hand though, i'm pretty sure its a done deal barring anything major happening medically or with the law

Thank you for the response. So is the first swear in for when you get put into the pool of recruits and are getting ready to be sent out to basic? If i leave Meps will my recruiter flip out. Or can i go their and just swear in. Once at meps and i take the ASVAB and get the sheet with jobs on it. Do i have to pick one on the spot or can i take it home and sleep on it for a little.
