It seems like society today makes the majority feel awkward or out of place for wanting to learn. The Army is not as guilty as the general public, but the underlying attitude is there.

Why do most people look at you funny when you say you're reading a book or watching documentaries instead of sitcoms?

Just curious if I'm the only one to notice. Figured this was a good medium to find some quality opinions

It's pretty common in the States, brawn over brain. I'm sure a lot of has to do with their own insecurities.
Over here in Japan though, people like to be small and many girls think big muscles look weird. Just a difference in what people see as important.
