What things or themes would you incorporate?

Words are great. Pictures are cool. Bonus points for the PowerPoint Rangers.

Some themes I'd like to see incorporated in the design:
- Technology (Chemicals, tanks, aviation, battleships, automatic weapons, etc)
- Civilian contributions and labor force
- Flu Pandemic
- Allied coalitions
- Trench warfare

I think that it is important to demonstrate the worst parts of war; it gives people looking at the memorial the smallest idea of what it means to be a service member during that conflict. I would create a bronze wall approximately 100ft long and design it to look like the inside of a trench. Along the length of the wall there should be various scenes taking place, a soldier putting a tourniquet on the leg of a comrade, a priest praying over the dead, a brave officer or NCO rallying the men to fight, a scared private curled up and praying; emotional scenes that depict the horror of war and the different experiences that many who were there would relate to. Each of these bring a different message to the monument. Then, along the top of the wall, each major battle should be listed with the count of U.S. military members killed or wounded. On the opposite side of the wall from the statues, each name of KIAs etched into the wall.

Similar to CPT Ricky Riley's idea. I think it would be cool to allow the visitors to walk through the trench as you suggested. Good stuff.

Almost everything that was before died; metaphorically if not damn near literally.

A cross formed from welded parts of broken weapons, tools and personal effects of the period sitting in a garden of living poppy flowers.

Trench warfare, with soldiers laying where they were shot down at.
