I’m going to my first duty station soon and I’m debating on going first and having my family come after, or us going together. Any thoughts on this?

SSG (Join to see) I am speaking from a number of years back. When stateside my family went with me, but I saw buddies who went ahead and called for their family when they secured a place, or took leave and accompanied them to their new home. The latter was a little tougher to do. For overseas tours, your family didn't get orders until you secured a place to live. Best to you brother.

Appreciate your input brother. It’s a little bit of a headache because my fiancé and I aren’t married yet. So we’re going to tie the knot legally first before I leave.

Went to Germany with my family at the same time. We had a temporary room for a few days. A bit like a hotel room but on base then got quarters assigned and moved right in. The Army took good care of us during the transition and don't recall any hardships. Not sure how it would work going seperately or if that was even a choice. I was however deployed within a month of landing for a year so we weren't 100% moved in when I left. Then when I got back I was gone every other month as well.

Hopefully you'll have better lucky staying in one place.

I was active duty but cannot believe the policies are that divergent. There are many reasons why a Family may not travel at the same time as the SM, school, medical or in your case simply waiting for housing to become available. You will have time, you just need to check with the S1 to determine how long. You may also read the travel authorization on your orders. Thank you for your service.

I ended up coming alone then my family came afterwards. You’re absolutely right CSM. Thank you. And thank you for your service as well.

I apologize for the very delayed response. This was reposted and I did not notice that it was 6 months old. I hope you had a Merry Christmas and are with your Family soon.
