TSgt Joshua Copeland, that's a good video and good advice. And it's SOP for the Army. We have boards (in person boards) for promotion E-5 and E-6, and for Soldier of the Month, Quarter, Year. I even attended a board for selection to warrant officer. I'm guessing this more "old hat" in the Army than it is in the Air Force.
By the way, when I was attending boards, we knocked on the door three times. I don't know if that's still the expected Army standard. Saying "Ma'am" and "Sir" to NCOs? We definitely are two different Services!

CW5 (Join to see), boards were big when I first came in, but then deployments ramped up and they kind of went away because you couldn't have a face to face board without everyone there. This was because in the AF we do not deploy as a unit, but deploy in individual taskings where a a deployed squadron (other then flying or mx) will have people form a dozen or so bases. With the proliferation of VTC capabilities, they are starting to make a come back. Especially for "monthly" awards like "Diamond Sharp" or "Airman of the Month" where the member is actually on station.
WRT to the knock, I guess the Army is like Sheldon on Big Bang Theory.

Sir/Ma'am is common up and down the rank structure for Big Blue. I have seen Chief's (E9's) call A1C's (E3's) Sir/Ma'am.
