I've been tapped as our master of ceremonies for our event. Last year was apparently disappointing. This year they are trying to spruce it up a bit. We have a photo booth rented. The budget is set though, so we can't add to prices. This is stuff we can do to keep things interesting etc.
What I've done so far is set up an Instagram and Twitter account as well as a Facebook event. Gonna have people hashtag photos etc. Hoping to turn it a little towards social media. Gotta figure the event is geared a lot towards junior Soldiers, and they're gonna be on their phones anyhow. Might as well try to keep them engaged.

Our BN does not want to do a grog bowl...so that's out. Rules of the mess early as in before the event or early in the event? Do you have an example of the rules?
We have a COL speaking, seems to be cool, but most of this was planned before me.

CW2 (Join to see). Has the option of the "leaded" and/or "unleaded" Grog Bowl been broached? This is the standard for AF Dining in/out as not to encourage alcohol consumption and the standard caveats of have a DD, etc, etc.

As for publishing them, I am referring to making sure they are pushed out to the attendees well before the mess. Traditionally they are also put in the program or one I went to had them laminated in addition to the program.

The following is a list of rules under which the mess will be conducted. They are designed to conform to tradition and promote levity. I've never been to a "dining out" or a ball or any official military type thing, so I have no idea how casual the events should be.
Here are some things that I love when they're done at parties and other casual gatherings:
- Plan a flash mob using at least a dozen volunteers to put on a choreographed scene when a certain song plays
- Have a good DJ who plays interactive songs like the Cha-Cha Slide
- Have an Electric Slide Contest (even older people know how to do that dance)
- Give a prize every 1/2 hour for best photo posted to IG or Twitter during event
- Poker/blackjack table (chips redeemable for drinks/trinkets)
- Raffle drawing for gift certificates donated by area restaurants/businesses
- Black Light Room with glow stick tic-tac-toe, neon paint, etc.
- Have a theme like "The 80s" so people can wear crazy accessories
I guess that if a dining out is a formal thing, most of those ideas wouldn't fly, but here's to hoping it's more fun than formal!

hmmm...I have to look up the raffles, not sure if we can do that legally. But I like the prizes, just not sure what. And I'll make sure I keep the DJ up to stuff like playing the right songs.
