Typically an NCO gets recognized by an officer and is awarded a Cert Com, Letter or Appreciation, or if he wants to award him on the spot, is given a coin. It always seems that it is the officer 'coining' the NCO.
What I propose is an old idea with a new twist...when an officer backs up an NCO and shows that he is worthy of him command, the NCOS in hi unit should 'coin' him instead. The NCOs can designate one NCO (usually) the Senior, but in this case it must from all levels of NCOs: Cpl, Sgt, SSgt, SFC, GySgt, MGySgt,MSgt, 1stSgt. This official 'coining' would cement the relationship between the NCO and the Officer. An officer would strive to be coined by all NCOs before he transfers to his next command. Any changes needed in this paradigm shift? Any likes or dislikes? Any alibis? Hang-fires?

Im not opposed to the idea, but i see the potential for this to backfire. Somebody might get their feelings because they didnt coined, leadership styles may clash, somebody may feel pressured. May turn the environment toxic.

Just like some NCOs don't get a AAM or ARCOM, I don't think it is possible that this alone could make it toxic.

Coins are also not cheap to produce! Commanders normally have O&M funds to get coins made.

I suppose a NCO fund could be collected. Also a pogey bait fund could be started (Candy and soda). If you do a bulk buy, they can be reasonable. It shouldn't be an expensive task, and Officers usually stick around for Two years...so really how many would you have to buy?

SSG(P) (Join to see), your statement of "An officer would strive to be coined by all NCOs before he transfers to his next command" is what would make it expensive. Either everyone would have their own personalized coin or the leaving officer would have 200 of the same coin?

This 'new tradition' needs some polishing I agree...and ai proposed that we open it for suggestions. I think 'a coin' from the PSG or lower is prudent and also appropriate from squad leader and lower, but he or she must 'really deserve' it. If company S1 sold coins, it would also be a great fund raiser.

There are already commercially available coins for specific ranks. You often see them in the MCSS.
