I have noticed throughout my career as a junior NCO and now senior NCO some of us are not giving the opportunity to serve in certain duty positions due to the slot is already filled or the CSM, 1SG, or the individual don't want to give up the position even if you PCS. In my opinion I feel as NCOs we all should be able to rotate into a duty position such as Junior Officers. I have seen quite a few NCOs who never served as Platoon Sergeant or Maintenance Control Sergeant for my career field. I know some may say they don't have the experience or don't want work as Operations or Platoon Sergeant so they are placed else where. I understand that some duty position's require certain schooling or clearance and mission dictating. I bring this up because I have witnessed in my previous unit where the BN CDR had all of his Officers in the BN and BDE within his career field that he had control over listed by Rank, Year Group, Duty Position and who would be rotating into the next position i.e. Commander, XO, PL, etc. Even with Officers not within his career field he had already coordinated with their BN CDR i.e. BSB Commander so they knew exactly where they would headed next in duty position or PCS. As for us NCOs at times we don't get that opportunity, but I have had a CSM do the same for me and other NCOs in the BN. The CSM was looking out for career progression and trying to set us apart from our peers within our career field.

I'm not sure I agree, at least with a rotation through Platoon Sergeant position. This is a time for refreshing and retraining our forces after years of conflict. With the possibility of more conflict fairly likely in the near future, I think that platoons need continuity as much a possible, especially with the leaders.
