So both my wife and I have been calling pretty much every number under the sun to figure out my living situation when I PCS to Alaska next month. From what I’ve been told, NCOs are not allowed in the barracks but are not getting BAH. And for someone in my situation where my wife CANNOT come with me due to her divorce decree and child custody agreement, I’ll be forced to pay out of pocket for somewhere off post while my BAH goes towards my house in TN for my wife and kid. Can someone give me better advice or knowledge on this?

SGT...
I just left Ft Winwright.... the policy is true.. they reason they did it was because the lack of space.... but my recommendation is when you get there talk to your CSM and explain the situation....

The lack of room is really bad on post to the point that they were signing waiver for E5 (single) to go off post if they wanna it

I guess it’s just odd that I was told wainwright is completely understrength but yet, they can’t house everyone they have right now. But I will talk to the CSM as soon as I get up there.

They get the summer flux of a lot AIT Soldiers of 11B and 19D series is bad .... so the space is really bad....

For some MOS they are very under strength but for the combat arms for E1-E4 is not under strength...

Good Luck!!!!

I finally got a hold of the garrison commanders barracks policy regarding accompanied/unaccompanied soldiers and their living arrangements. It states you can request exception to policy and upon the GC’s approval you can be grated dual BAH. Do you have any insight on that? Is it rare to get approved? Etc.. 1SG (Join to see)

Nothing like that came across to me while I was there.... so I’m not sure how hard is to get it approve

You should receive a waiver, however the government will not authorize two BAH unless they deploy you to an unaccompanied assignment. in this case it is not firmer to the military. However, I am sure that whomever informed you is mistaken. Call the Garrison CSM who oversees all barracks and housing to verify. Thank you for your service.

Hey SGT. I spent 4 years up there. We put unaccompanied NCOs at the rank of E5 in the unit barracks at no cost to them. They also had GEO bachelor barracks but they might have changed all that since I left in 2014. Which unit are you going to? I know a few folks who are still there.

I’m going to 1-24. Apparently there was a policy put out very recently where anyone who was unaccompanied and recieving BAH for their dependents back home were not allowed to live in the barracks. They had 72 hours to get out.
