Not likely. The norm is being advanced to SPC. To get CPL in the Army (especially when not in a Combat Arms MOS), a DA Form 4187 for Lateral Promotion has to be approved. I say this because a Soldier in my current unit just got laterally promoted to CPL from SPC and this form was needed to have that happen.

SPC (Join to see) to amplify what MSG (Join to see) said, what is happening behind the curtain, is your Battalion is forfeiting their slot for an E5 Sergeant. On the AD side, a new SGT will not PcS in against that slot from the assignments process if they fill it with a CPL. If it is a slot that is habitually underfilled, and you demonstrate high performance potential as well as initial capability, they may elect to do that. What will happen is you will go to SPC, then CPL if they elect to laterally appoint you.

LTC Jason Mackay SPC (Join to see) I my 8 years of service, what LTC Mackay described was the case every time. Though I was not in a combat MOS, I was in an infantry unit (we're all unofficially infantry, lol). Was rare outside the infantry.

I commend you on wanting to pin CPL, but I am curious as to why? You will most likely see SPC first as CPL is a lateral promotion from there. Also you need to be filling an E5 position normally to be eligible for CPL.

1SG Timothy Trewin Sounds a lot like a Cpl in the Marine Corps the more you explain it.

SPC (Join to see) The SPC tank is known as the “sham shield” for a reason. Same pay as a CPL without the responsibility. You don’t earn any kind of respect as far as rank goes until you pin SGT.

1SG Timothy Trewin The Army Corporal is like the Butter Bar of the enlisted side. Get all the shit task that need a NCO but no one wants. But you are still a soldier who has a lot to learn and due.

I went from PFC to CPL. Even then it was still an up and over promotion. You have to be promoted to SPC to be promoted to CPL.
