I feel some leadership around me worry more about how the soldiers perceive them instead of being consistent in the ability to Mentor.

You bring up a very valid point, and I think this is an issue happening most everywhere within the Army.  Soldiers and NCOs alike are afraid to make on-the-spot corrections... afraid to tactfully speak their mind when the situation dictates... and probably the biggest thing I've noticed, seem to turn a blind eye to issues if the Soldier/NCO in the wrong isn't "their" Soldier/NCO.  And in this day and age, perception is what most people crave... I blame social media for the rise in narcissistic tendencies.

SSG Krebsbach,
You and I are on the same page. Soldiers and Leaders are unable to "Tactfully speak their minds". Now the next issue is how do we remind them they are empowered to do so? Do great things SSG.

1SG,

It is all about the politics now, instead of doing your job as leaders and mentoring and teaching the crop of future leaders, most of the current leadership and this goes down to the junior NCO/Officer level is more concerned about losing their jobs to the up and coming they are getting away from teaching and mentoring because they don't want that person or persons to take it from them, plain and simple.

The environment has been created by the "me" generation and the politics of what has been created from Congress and the current administration has made it even worse.

I’ve had more issues with NCOs concerned with how higher sees them. I heard a lot of negativity about issues like new equipment that adds nothing to the fight. When asked by Seniors, a lot of opinions changed over to “yes it’s great”. Similar to the borrowing tools to be 100 percent on inventory, not pointing out the drawbacks and smiling and nodding won’t help anyone. (I once requested to be called an opinionated jerk on an NCOER)

I used the big brother approach to corrections for other people’s soldiers not to mention I was a fan of stating my references and telling them to double check with their team leader.
