I recently found out that I may have the opportunity to complete a KD position (BN S2) prior to attending the MICCC. My promotion board convenes this year and I will be requesting my career course date this summer. I have recieved guidance from Officers Sr to me and have recieved mixed opoinions, so I thought I would present this to the RP Community.

Should I pursue KD time prior to the career course, delaying my graduation? Or should I get to the MICCC as soon as possible? GO!

I would never turn down the opportunity for KD time, especially if you're about to become promotable. Having ANY KD prior to the MICCC will put you ahead of your peers and it will open up more assignment opportunities for you after the MICCC. You would also have more of a chance of going to an INSCOM unit after because of that, or other broadening assignments. If you didn't have any KD time, branch's priority would be to try to place you in a FORSCOM unit in order to get that KD time so you'd be a little more restricted in regards to assignments and you might have to wait for the BDE AS2/BN S2/Command position to open. That being said, I wouldn't push CCC too far to the right either, especially after you pin CPT.

Personally, I'd take that 1LT(P) KD opportunity in a heartbeat.

If you have any further questions feel free to message me any time.

I see you are at the career course now. Do you mind going through how assignments are given out? I assume there is some kind of OML like there was at OCS and the top of the class picks first.

Honestly, I have no idea how branch places people but I’ll give you as much info as I can about the MI assignment process. Just a little disclaimer, it’s probably always subject to change so this is from my experience last year. Several weeks into the MICCC, branch will come down and give you an initial brief and you have the opportunity to ask any general questions at the time. Your class assignment slate will come anywhere from a couple of days to weeks later via email from your leadership. It’s a spreadsheet with 4 categories: Corps and Below, INSCOM, Corp and above/broadening and training. Next to those categories are assignments that are available by unit and location, but it does not depict how many slots are available at each location. It’ll also indicate whether or not the position requires an AOC, requires you to be KD Complete, or whether it is a nominative assignment. Then you’ll be given a preference sheet to fill out and you list your top 25 assignments, to include what training you would like to go to. Also, if you do not have any KD time, you can only list 3 choices from either INSCOM or Corp and above/broadening. You also have the opportunity to list the one location you do not want to go to. Branch will assign an interview time for each student when they return. They sit down with you and go over your ORB and your OERs and they tell you where you rank within your year group. Then you seemingly wait forever until the assignment list comes out, again via email from leadership, and your fate is sealed! If you are slotted as a 35F or 35E, you’ll be reslated with another class closer to the completion of your follow-on so you won’t know your duty station for a while unless you have a BNR or something. 35G is a hit or miss. Sometimes you’ll have an assignment and sometimes you’ll have to be reslated with another class, same with SI-1D.

With all that was said, does that mean you won’t be assigned an INSCOM assignment without KD? No. Does that mean you won’t be assigned that place you ABSOLUTELY did not want to go to? No. I know people who got their top choice (to include school and duty station) or their 20th choice. I don’t think anyone in my class received an assignment that wasn’t on their list at all, that in itself shows how much effort branch puts into putting you where you'd like to go. Again, that's just for MY class. Other classes might not have been so lucky.

Fantastic rundown of the assignment process, ma'am. This gives me a much better idea of how the inner workings of the CCC assignment process works. Did you end up getting what you were hoping for?

METT-TC. Answer that is best for you depends upon your answers to these questions:
- What are your near (less than 1 year), mid (1-5 year), and long (5-10 year) personal and professional goals?
- What are the KD requirements for your rank and MOS?
- How does accepting or not accepting this opportunity help or inhibit you reaching your personal and professional goals?
- Is there a middle appoach where you can have your cake and eat it too? For example, if KD means 12 months, could your rater/senior rater put you in the job for 11 months? This means that you are not KD complete and would have to have a KD opportunity after MICCC while still having a KD opportunity before MICCC?
- Recommend you walk through answers to the above questions then engage in a dialogue with your chain of command.

Sir, this gives me a fantastic jumping point to ask more specific questions to my CoC and Branch as well as my mentors. I greatly appreciate the advice.

I would probably need more information, but based on what I heard, I would do the KD. I had a chance to become an O4 or take a MI Company CDR job. If I took the CO position it would delay my promotion by 3 years.

I gladly took the CO position because I would not have had that experience (one of the best military positions I have had) and can be hard to come by. When I meant to the MICCC, I had 2 years as a BN S2, 1 year as a BDE Deputy S2, and as a MICO CDR.

As a result, the MICCC was much easier for me than most because of my experience. It was more enjoyable for me since many were stressed out on some of the tasks we had to do. Any way you probably can get a BN S2 position after the MICCC, but having more experience under your belt is helpful.
