Any advice for a National Guard Sn NCO that’s PCS’ing to Washington Military District?

I’ve been picked up for a 1-3 year COADOS tour in the DC area. I’ve mobilized and deployed 4 times overseas but never done a PCS w/family stateside. Any and all advice is appreciated.

If your Family is coming with you, you need to do an advance search on housing. While the military allots for BAH in the region your life style and what you are used to where you are will likely not be afforded. Other than that listen to your Guard Brothers. Thank you for your service.

Roger that CSM Darieus ZaGara we’ve already did the housing application and are on the waitlist for housing. Also, we’ve engaged a local realtor. Basically burning both ends of that candle.

Where are you going in DC. We lived on Ft. Belvoir in Woodlawn Village. Very nice area great running path. I commuted to Annicosta Boiling, DC every day. A lot of people lived in Woodbridge, Manassas got backed up a lot but nice place to live. We lived in the Alexandria area. If you can get on base I would do. The VA schools are better than DC if you have kids. If you need more info let me know SFC (Join to see) . I will be glad to help.

SSG Steven Borders I’ll be administratively assigned to Belvoir. Assigned to AW2 program in Alexandria.
We were looking at off post housing but not sure. Seems it’d cost more to stay on post (ie forfeiting all BAH), but off base housing seems to be a pain as well.
Far as school- Unfortunately my only minor child lives with my ex so won’t be bringing her aside from visits.

I loved Ft. Belvoir but again I wasn't assigned there so that might have made a difference. I only lived there. Yeah, it is not cheap living off post as most people learned who where assigned to WHCA. I lived on the off post section of Belvoir. So no gate guard, I really enjoyed it. Closed enough to Belvoir to go to the commissary and what not, but off post were you didn't have to deal with regular base stuff. Not like how Ft. Stewart was. Enjoy seeing the sites too, I recommend parking in Ronald Reagan Building. It is close to the White House and you don't have to worry about taking the Metro. I hated the Metro there it was getting really bad. Lot's to do and see around the area, Oh, and Washingtons House is there right out side of Belvoir. Mount Vernon is really something to see. SSG Steven Borders ironically, I parked at the Reagan Bldg when I went there in ‘14. Parked and took the poor mans walking tour. All up and down the mall. Throughly lived that trip.
We’re leaning towards base housing. If anything just to keep it simple (to the extent possible).

Washington is a heck of a tour. You and your family will enjoy yourselves immensely.
