While you a "technically" a 68W, you're not qualified as a 68W since you haven't graduated AIT yet. You are an initial entry student so the normal branch manager who slots 68W is not the one who will slot you. IET are slotted by accession branch, I believe.
Your drill Sergeant can't prevent you from contacting the branch, however. You will need an Airborne physical if you plan on asking for an Airborne assignment. That's not to say you'll go to Bragg, either. IET students are sent to fill whatever vacancies the Army needs most.

Was going to say the same. IETs are not assigned their first assignment by their Branch managers. Your Branch Manager can help you once it is time for you to PCS from your initial duty station.

I wanted to go to the 82nd when I was in AIT as well. I was contracted to attend Airborne School, but had assignment information to the 82nd before I left AIT. I didn't have to take any extra steps though, I guess it just kind of worked out. I'm not sure if they still let IET students volunteer for Airborne School at AIT, but that will be your best chance of getting to the 82nd or Fort Bragg. Usually the Army is always looking for Airborne volunteers.

(Join to see) You won't know if you meet the qualifications until you try. It can be much more difficult to get an Airborne School slot once you are at your first unit. I knew non-airborne personnel who were already assigned to the 82D and it still took the unit multiple years to get them to Airborne School.

If you can volunteer for Airborne School while in AIT, trust me, DO IT. Don't disqualify yourself before you've tried; force the Army to make that decision instead, by applying. Worse case scenario is you don't get accepted, but at least you took control of your career and volunteered to do something the majority of Soldiers in the Army won't. Most Soldiers let others control their careers, and they end up rarely getting anything they want.

The fact you want to serve in the 82D already says lot about you, and reminds me of myself 14 years ago. You're a paratrooper at heart, so go make it official.

No you’ll contact your branch manager when your 3/4 of the way through AIT and ask what duty stations do you have open? Then select from that list.
